Hiking, Kaweah, Cabbage, Tromboncino, and Tofu Horror

by Raven

We had a real mixed bag on Facebook this week.

Acorn went hiking and we reposted it.

This did pretty well on Facebook.

After my faux pas naming the Small Living Groups in Kaweah last month, I was surprised that Twin Oaks posted another random picture of Kaweah, but I took the opportunity to show I had learned from my mistake.

For some reason, this did very well.

East Wind has been posting a lot of harvest pictures lately (probably because it’s fall and they are doing a lot of harvesting). This time they posted a bunch of pix of their cabbage harvest.

This post did pretty well.

Living Energy Farm showed off a squash.

This did very well.

And finally, a leftover from Halloween.

This did pretty well.

I wonder how many Rocky Horror fans like tofu?

Sweet Potatoes, Acorns, Leaves, Squash, and Garlic

by Raven

It’s mid-fall and well into harvest season, so everything is plant related this week.

East Wind celebrates their sweet potato harvest.

This did very well on Facebook.

Meanwhile, at Twin Oaks they were harvesting acorns.

This did okay on Facebook.

For the Magnolia Collective, the harvest was leaves–or rather, kids helping gather the leaves.

This did pretty well.

East Wind has been doing a lot of harvesting and publishing about it. Here’s their squash harvest:

This post did phenomenal!

And at East Brook Community Farm (Glomus Commune’s business), it was garlic, their biggest crop.

Unfortunately, this post didn’t do very well on Facebook.

Maybe people prefer squash to garlic.

Hello September

We’re back–that is to say that Commune Life is posting again.  Honestly, I’m still traveling and will be at the Communities Conference this weekend but, because of the magic of scheduling, Commune Life will begin catching up on all the community news from the last month or so, plus a report on the Queer Gathering, a new video from the kids at Twin Oaks, and more–including, hopefully in a week or so, a report on the Communities Conference and a podcast on the communes and communist economic theory.  Enjoy!   –   Raven

Ferments, Flowers, and Land Day

by Raven

Here’s more stuff from the last two weeks on Facebook.

Fermenting vegetables one of the safest methods of food preservation.  SESE reposted a piece on how to do it.

The link in the picture won’t work but here’s a working one.

This post did pretty well on Facebook.

At Glomus, we’re just celebrating seeing flowers again.

This one did okay on Facebook.

And finally, it was recently Land Day at East Wind (which is the celebration of the anniversary of them getting their land).

This also did pretty well on Facebook.

Snow, Tests, Wassailing, Solar, and Parenting

by Raven

More winter recap:

Twin Oaks posted more about their week with lots of snow and no power, what they are calling “Snowmageddon”:

This post did well.

Acorn has been using some of their winter time to check the seeds they sell:

This also did fairly well:

Over at Glomus Commune, we were wassailing once again:

This post did pretty well on Facebook:

We also published a post from Living Energy Farm:

This post did very well:

And it got a couple of nice comments:

Finally, Twin Oaks also got an article about them in “The Cut” (part of New York magazine) focusing on parenting there:

Here’s the link to the article: https://www.thecut.com/…/parenting-twin-oaks-commune…

Warning–New York magazine has a semi-pay wall. They will let you read a few articles before they start telling you that you are reaching your limit for free articles. If you haven’t read much of their online stuff, you should be okay.

This piece did exceptionally well:

Cara Ziegel commented first

Then she and I got into a back and forth about whether Commune Life had already posted this piece or something like it

Fires, Goats, Seeds, and New Year’s Eve

by Raven

Here it is almost the end of January and I’m still posting on stuff from almost a month ago. And that starts with New Year’s Eve at Twin Oaks:

Our posting of this did fairly well on Facebook:

Serenity Community also posted about their workshop on New Years Day at Twin Oaks on the Serenity webpage and we put that up on our Facebook feed as well:

This did very well:

Acorn posted this little video about how some folks there begin their morning:

(Unfortunately, I couldn’t copy the actual video but you can look at it on their Instagram site at: https://www.instagram.com/p/CYEX0RFKXv5/ )

This post didn’t do nearly as well as others have recently:

And, now that it’s January, here’s a common enough question with an unusual answer:

As you can see, this post didn’t do too badly.

Finally, Serenity Community also posted this piece focusing on a worthy business to support:

This also did okay:

Snow, Trees, Tofu, and LLCs

by Raven

Again, here’s a recap of the week’s posts on Facebook. I’m still playing catchup on old posts on other commune sites.

At Twin Oaks, they were dealing with a relatively recent snow storm that knocked out their power.

This post did very well on Facebook:

The comments were cool, too.

Here’s a couple of posts about what I am calling Solstice Trees. The first is from Glomus, the community I live in right now, showing the lovely tree we had.

This post did okay on Facebook:

Acorn posted about their tree as well–but theirs had a multi-seasonal twist.

This post didn’t do as well. I’m not sure why.

I also republished an old post from Living Energy Farm, about them cooking up Twin Oaks tofu:

As you can see, it did very well. Some of the comments explain some of it–people definitely like Twin Oaks tofu.

Finally, in an important step for the development of the Serenity Community, they are now a legal corporation (an LLC, a Limited Liability Company).

This did well–although I wish it did better. I’m hoping more folks will know and support this emerging community.

Compost, Snow, Solar, and Gratitude

by Raven

It’s January but we took the month of December off, so there is a lot to catch up on.

First, in December Twin Oaks published some pictures from their Gratitude feast:

This was well received on our Facebook feed (276 people saw it and fifteen reacted with Likes and such):

This was a lot but when we just posted the announcement on Facebook on January first that we were back 360 people looked at it and we got 24 reactions. Everything from here on had less traffic.

I have been paying attention to the Magnolia Collective, one of the new communities in Louisa, and noticed that Living Energy Farm has been helping them get off the grid. (Which makes sense, since Magnolia is a sort of LEF spinoff.)

The original post was quite a while ago, so I wonder how much more has been done.

This post did fairly well on our Facebook feed:

Next is some long delayed pictures of the first snowfall here at Glomus.

This one did about as well as the Magnolia solar post:

Finally, for now, Acorn got a delivery of mushroom compost back at the beginning of December and they were almost as excited about the truck that delivered it as they were about the compost itself.

The next two pictures are screenshots of videos that Acorn posted of the truck in action. To see the original videos, you can go to their Instagram post.

And here’s one of the Acorn folks checking out their new resource:

This was just posted yesterday on Facebook (which is when I’m writing this), so the statistics will probably change but here’s what they were as of 2:20pm Thursday:

Again, not too bad. I suspect by now it’s probably been seen by over 150 folks, which is about what the last two were. The comments were about the fact that I said that the Acorn folks “are celebrating” and Cara (rightly) pointed out that these pictures were old. I acknowleged it:
