Alpha Farm is an income-sharing community that has been around since 1972. It was not part of the Federation of Egalitarian Communities for some reason that I don’t understand but seemed like it had to do with communal politics. In this video two members are being interviewed by two members of The Garden, another very interesting community, and the two communities are being compared and contrasted.
The reason Alpha Farm did not join the FEC is because they have a profit-sharing plan where members accumulate each year a portion of community income when the community makes a profit. As I understand it this fund is only accessed when a person gives up membership in Alpha Farm, although there may be more to what that fund can be used for now. Because Alpha’s personal leaving fund is not “total income sharing” the decision was mutual that Alpha could not join the FEC.
