In my ongoing quest to come up with provocative questions for our Facebook feed, I started thinking about the horizontal structures of egalitarian communities. I realized that being ‘Leaderless’ doesn’t mean that there is no leadership. So here’s what I wrote on Facebook:

As you can see, we got three comments. One of them was from me. I took the opportunity to elaborate on my ideas of leadership in an egalitarian setting.

Of course, if you have any ideas about leadership, you are free to comment here.
At work, when we are new, we are handed work and we do it and learn. As we learn we begin to see problems and improvements ourselves, and we take on that work, and become more self directed and our contributions are larger and more elegant. We reach a point where we are asked to do more not by working longer hours but by “multiplying” ourselves, which means we identify problems and hand them to the newer people and teach them in addition to doing our own work. In this way, we become leaders when we have the experience to lead.
